On Thursday, an Islamic law court in Kano state dissolved the marriage of Asia Ganduje and Inuwa Uba.
Asia is the daughter of Kano state governor, Abdullahi Ganduje.
The judge of the court, Malam Abdullahi Haliru, said that the marriage was done through Khul’i (divorce through Islam).
The judge ordered the plaintiff to return the N50,000 the defendant paid as dowry 16 years ago.
Halliru concluded that the conditions that Inuwa presented earlier “became based on the Islamic Sunnah on Khul’i”.
“Khul’i stood firm on returning the dowry given to a woman.
“The situation should not affect her in any way, especially in giving her wealth”, he said.
Asia, through her lawyer, Ibrahim Aliyu-Nassarawa, insisted that he return the bride price so that the marriage could be dissolved.
In her affidavit, the petitioner informed the court that she was tired of her relationship with Inuwa.
Asia said that “every woman who lives in an extraordinary situation” has the right in Islamic law to ask for a divorce.
Earlier, Inuwa’s lawyer, Umar I. Umar stated that the issue is more than the payment of dowry of N50,000.
“The defendant has four children with the plaintiff, but all efforts to reconcile them failed,” said Umar.
In his situation, Inuwa begged Asia to return his certificate, house certificate, cars and release her rights in their rice company.
