Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike and his supporters say they will not take part in the People’s Democratic Party presidential campaign ( PDP) until National President Iyorchia Ayu resigns.
This development came after a meeting held in Rivers State on Wednesday.
Reading the statement after the meeting, PDP leader Bode George said that the campaign council list published by the party and putting Wike’s name as a member “puts the cart before the horse”
“The published list of the presidential campaign council translates into putting the cart before the horse, the relevant question remains the Ayu leadership”, George said.
“We therefore decide that Senator Iyorchia Ayu resign from his post of national president for an interim president of southern Nigerian origin.
“We have decided not to participate in the council campaign in any capacity until the resignation of Dr. Iyorchia Ayu.”
Former Vice President Abubakar Atiku is the party’s presidential candidate.
The party is in crisis since the emergence of its presidential candidate and the subsequent appointment of Ifeanyi Okowa, Governor of Delta State, as his running mate.
There have been calls from some PDP stakeholders, in particular Seyi Makinde, Governor of Oyo; Samuel Ortom, Governor of Bénoué; George, Jerry Gana, former Minister of Information, that the national president of the party must resign for peace to reign.
